A talented cast can make a good script great and an awful one bearable. In the case of this Sundance Festival darling, stars James Gandolfini, Melissa Leo, and Kristen Stewart — the Twilight ingĂ©nue proves she can emote when she wants to — make a mediocre story of damaged souls interesting.
Gandolfini and Leo play Doug and Lois Riley, a married couple who are still struggling to cope with the death of their teenage daughter eight years later. Lois has confined herself to the house; she’s so emotionally broken she makes her hairdresser come to her. No longer able to connect with his wife, Doug starts up an affair with a waitress (Eisa Davis) — but when she unexpectedly dies of a heart attack, he’s suddenly anchorless. During a business trip to New Orleans he finds new hope in a 16-year-old stripper/prostitute (Stewart) who reminds him of his lost daughter. Doug moves in with her as a way to protect her, and soon Lois’ agoraphobia is lifted when she, too, moves to Louisiana to complete their new makeshift family.
Gandolfini continues to take challenging roles that are miles removed from Tony Soprano, and Leo continues her career resurgence which began with Frozen River. Stewart’s usual fan base may be shocked by her gritty role, but she does a commendable job of portraying the teen struggling to deal with the Rileys’ sudden affection.

Kristen Stewart : From Bella to Mallory
Appart from the Twilight Saga, Kristen Stewart plays strong characters in The Runaways and in Welcome to The Riley. Both are opposite of the sweet Bella, her character Mallory is a young prostitute, played with co-star James Gandolfini(Sopranos).
When you were 12 you were in Panic room. Today with the Twilight phenomenon you keep playing different characters and it seems like you want to break the idea that people have of you...
I'm not really looking for this, it's just that I'm not Bella Swan! In 2004 I played a broken teenager who was raped, and I also had a role in Into The Wild, you see I've always played different roles, the fact that Twilight is a saga and that there are five movies give the impression that it's the only thing I do, but it's definitely not true ! Don't get me wrong I love playing Bella, it's just that I'm able to play many other characters & styles! (smile) You just need to watch Welcome To The Rileys to understand this. I'm playing a young prostitute who meets James Gandolfini's character Doug, a man who is upset by the lost of his daughter, and he offers her money just for being allowed to live with her, because she reminds him of his child.
How was the work with James Gandolfini?
It was awesome to work with an actor like him. This movie is very touching, James obvouisly took care of me very well while we were filming, he made things easier. It wasn't difficult to get throught our charcaters, it was very fluent! I've been s blessed to meet new people and live all these intense cinematographic adventures. I think that I've never been so happy! I'm aware that what's happening is particularly unique, maybe things won't be like that forever so I just live the moment!
What was the harder for you on the set?
I think that the hardest thing was the dance, I took some lessons during two weeks of pole dance for the movie, but it wasn't the most complicated, being infront of James in a scene of seduction that was weird emotionally because we've got a father/daughter relation on the set, luckily James knew how to make me feel at ease, he acted like a father actually, like his character. And director Jake Scott was great too, it was a pleasure to work with him.

Asheville Cinema Society 'Welcome to the Rileys' Screening Ratings 4.5/5 Stars
Ashevillecinemasociety: Our February 15 film, Welcome to the Rileys, promised great things with James Gandolfini, Melissa Leo and Kristen Stewart starring and the film did not disappoint. Although somewhat upsetting in subject matter with the loss of a child, the story of three people coming together and how they change each other’s lives was engaging and heartfelt. The message of the film was both thought-provoking and heart-warming. Tom Anton’s behind-the-scenes stories having spoken with the director, Jake Scott, also made for great information and entertainment.
As always, audience participation sets ACS apart from just film attendance. Dan Yearick, a grief counselor was on hand to explain and answer questions pertaining to the subject matter after the movie. One of the great things about ACS is the variety of films and the discussions with fellow movie lovers after the screening.

'Welcome To The Rileys' Review
filmjabber.com reviews Welcome to the Rileys: People trash Kristen Stewart because of Twilight, but it's her little movies - the dramas that have dotted her short career - that remind us just how talented the actress really is. Welcome to the Rileys is just one more of those reminders.
Also starring James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo, Welcome to the Rileys is about a desperate, frustrated husband who, while on a business trip in New Orleans, decides to remain in the city indefinitely - despite being married. While there, he forms an unlikely fatherly relationship with a teenage stripper. Will it destroy his marriage or save it?
There is nothing significantly powerful about Welcome to the Rileys, and yet it's refreshingly unique in a way I just can't describe. A feel-good movie disguised at first as a gritty drama, it features great performances by its three leads and an engrossing story.
Stewart is excellent as the troubled teenager, a girl who masks her innocence and naivety about the world with crudeness and impulsiveness. Stewart embodies her character, locking onto the emotional core of a seemingly unsympathetic character.
Gandolfini will never be seen as anyone but Tony Soprano. It's a sad fate for the man as people tend to forget that he's an actor, and a good one at that. His performance here is also excellent if understated.
More importantly, he and Stewart have amazing chemistry with each other. The tug-and-war relationship between the two is extraordinarily engaging, one that grows and evolves in unpredictable and sometimes grating ways.
As for Leo, she was nominated for an Oscar for the wrong movie. She's received massive attention for The Fighter, but her neurotic, troubled performance in Welcome to the Riley is much more nuanced and emotional.
Welcome to the Rileys is a surprisingly good movie, one that got lost in the shuffle for whatever reason. It isn't inspiring or overpowering, but it works nonetheless.

Swiss Newspaper Review Welcome To The Rileys'
cineman.ch: A damaged middle-aged man and a young prostitute set up house together.
Since their daughter died 8 years ago, Doug and Lois' marriage has been on the rocks. In New Orleans for a convention, Doug meets a young stripper that reminds him of his dead child and decides to stay to take of her, hoping he can help her find a way out of prostitution. Slowly these two broken souls form a relationship...
Although saddled with a predictable plot, the second film by Jake Scott, son of Ridley Scott, is nevertheless sensitive and moving, with some fine acting by stars James Gandolfini , Kristen Stewart and Melissa Leo.
-----
Berner Zeitung: An outsider is rehearsing the moving standstill
Despair, sorrow, death: Rarely someone has produced this as calm as Jake Scott with "Welcome To The Rileys".
It begins with a burning car. And a man lighting a cigarette in the dark, while others celebrate in the background. Whoever has expected a feel good movie, is realizing by now that "Welcome To The Rileys" is not an invitation, but rather a warning.
Director Jake Scott, son of master director Ridley Scott ("Alien," "Gladiator"), proves in his second film a feeling for outsider topics, which were a few years ago common in the American art-house cinemas but in recent times rare.
Tears, Pills, Affairs
Doug Riley (James Gandolfini, "The Sopranos") is a heavyweight mid-fifty and co-owner of a hardware store, has an affair with a dark-skinned waitress and goes in the garage to cry.
His wife Lois (Melissa Leo) has isolated herself from the outer world, and seeks her salvation in pills. The reason for this comes out only when Doug sets out for a business trip.
From the tombstone to the strip bar
What follows, could amount to nothing more than a classical tears-weeper-dramaturgy. But Ken Dixon's screenplay affords surprises which lift "Welcome To The Rileys" way above the average.
When Doug, whose wife has already bought a grave stone for him, arrives in New Orleans, he discovers the very young Mallory (Kristen Stewart, "Twilight") at a strip shed.
She reminds him so much of his deceased daughter, so he stays to look after her. It's this courage to standstill, which distinguishes "Welcome To The Rileys".
The characters will be granted the opportunity to try something - no guarantee that it will work. That makes Doug, Mallory and Lois in their loneliness so complex. And this film, despite some clichéd moments, so lovable.
"Welcome To The Rileys" has hit the Swiss-German Theatres last Thursday. Check the trailer, more reviews and your screenings HERE

Kristen Stewart Shares 'Welcome To The Rileys' Set Moments

Kristen Stewart takes a Twilight detour to star in Welcome to the Rileys. Stewart exclusively tells us about some of the funnier moments on the set of Welcome to the Rileys, a film about family and what it means in today’s world.
Welcome to the Rileys stars James Gandolfini (The Sopranos) and Academy Award nominee and recent Golden Globe and SAG Award winner Melissa Leo as parents whose daughter has passed away, leaving the couple feeling empty for years.
While away on business in New Orleans, Doug Riley (James Gandolfini) meets Mallory (Kristen Stewart), a runaway who is making her living as a stripper. Unbeknownst to his wife, Doug decides to take Mallory under his wing and provides her with the fatherly figure she never knew. Gandolfini’s character abandons everything he knows in order to "save" Stewart’s Mallory.
The pair immediately has chemistry and all is going well until Doug and Mallory come home to meet Lois (Melissa Leo). The delicate balance of a marriage they had before is completely threatened by the presence of Mallory and Lois' belief that Doug is trying to replace his dead daughter with her.
Eventually, the three come together and Lois is so inspired by the new relationship in her and her husband’s lives that she is able to break down the walls that have kept her homebound since her daughter’s death.
Welcome to the Rileys premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010 and arrives on home video February 1. The deeply emotional film explores what happens when three lost souls come together and somehow make a family.
It is with great pleasure that we present our exclusive video with Kristen Stewart talking about the riveting Welcome to the Rileys, which she made on break from Twilight.
