TotalFilm Robert Pattinson admits that Bel Ami is still in editing because studio honchos are worried about alienating audiences used to his goody-two-shoes persona in the Twilight franchise.
RPattz plays the titular Bel Ami in an adaptation of Maupassant's classic novel about a 19th century womanising, social-climbing journalist who sleeps his way round Paris.
Filming in the UK and Budapest opposite leading ladies Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Kristen Scott Thomas wrapped in spring 2010 and was originally slated for a Christmas release. It currently has no confirmed opening date.
"We were really true to the book and because the guy is basically a shit who wins everything at the end it’s really difficult to market it – especially with me in it," Pattinson tells TF exclusively.
"Everyone’s worried that everyone’s going to be thinking, ‘Oh I want him to be nice, he’s got to be nice to all the ladies’."
Bel Ami, though, is an unrepentant cad. "I know," laughs the Water For Elephants star, "But that was fun!
Update: Bel Ami is already in Touchstone Pictures IMDb on the list of films they'll distribute in the US 2011

From InStyle UK - March 2011 issue
"In Bel Amì, my character marries Robert Pattinson. Robert is lovely. I worked with him pre-Twilight and he's not changed since then. The leads are Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Christina Ricci, so I'd turn up to make-up trailer and be like, "I'm sitting next to Uma"

Cineuropa is reporting that Bel Ami will be ready in time for this spring’s film festivals:
The Uma Thurman and Robert Pattinson vehicle Bel Ami, adapted from Guy de Maupassant’s short story, will be ready for Cannes or Venice. Rights have already been sold to Studio Canal Plus for France and Germany. Optimum has UK rights.
Protagonist Pictures are currently marketing their other movies, Tyrannosaur and The Deep Blue Sea.
Cineuropa mentions the possibility of the film potentially being part of the film festivals:
The Uma Thurman and Robert Pattinson vehicle Bel Ami, adapted from Guy de Maupassant’s short story, will be ready for Cannes or Venice. Rights have already been sold to Studio Canal Plus for France and Germany. Optimum has UK rights.
LeRPattzClub tells us the lineup for Cannes will be unveiled in April, while we won't know what films will participate in the Venice film festival until July. It seems we don't have much choice but to wait and see!
Kristin Scott Thomas recently spoke to the French press while accepting a Crystal Globe Award. She was asked about working with Rob in Bel Ami, and according to our partner site LeRPattzClub, this is what she replied:
"He is famous. He is loved. He's handsome and he's talented"
Holliday Granger talks about ‘Bel Ami’ and working with Robert in the movie. *Spoiler Warning*
Can you talk about the roles you did in Jane Eyre and Bel Ami, which you also have coming out this year?
GRAINGER: When I was younger, I always wanted to do period drama and never got to do it, until last January. And then, this last year was just period drama after period drama. I have a small part in Jane Eyre. I’m one of the Rivers sisters that saves Jane (Mia Wasikowska) from destitution. They’re a very lovely, very godly, very pure family. Bel Ami is the opposite. My character is more like Lucrezia. She’s an evil little witch that knows what she wants and is out to get the guy that she wants. She’s willing to upset her mom and upset anyone, just to get the guy that she wants.
Did you get to work with Robert Pattinson?
GRAINGER: Yeah, my character’s scenes are mainly with Rob ‘cause she marries him in the end. She does get him.
Is it just us, or is Uma Thurman trying to get in with Kristen Stewart? The "Kill Bill" actress already blipped on "Twilight" fans' radars when she filmed the steamy, sex-filled period drama "Bel Ami" with Robert Pattinson, and now Cinematical just debuted a smoochy poster for her film "Ceremony," in which she stars opposite Kristen's ex-boyfriend Michael Angarano.
Maybe she's just a "Twilight Saga" fan? After all, "Ceremony" also stars "Breaking Dawn" newcomer (and adorable "Pushing Daisies" star) Lee Pace.
In "Ceremony," Michael plays a man set to rekindle a romance with his former flame (Uma) who just happens to be engaged to someone else (Lee). By contrast, Rob's character in "Bel Ami" uses his wealthy mistress (Uma) to help him rise from rags to riches in late 19th century Paris. We love how Uma has turned into such a cougar, considering she's 16 and 17 years older than Rob and Michael, respectively.
Okay, so maybe we're making too big a deal out of this whole thing, but we think the whole Kristen Stewart connection is just too funny and random to ignore. And considering those are the only two actors Kristen has ever been romantically linked to, the coincidence is pretty significant. But somehow we completely doubt Uma had any idea Kristen dated either of these men when she took the roles.
Just because we think it’s fun to dredge up his quotes about "Bel Ami" up, here's what Rob says about the sex in the movie: "I think there's a lot of my crack in it. I think there's quite a bit of nudity," he said. "It was such a strange story. I think it will turn out to be very interesting, but I have no idea about any of it yet."

Happy New Year, fellow Twi-Hards. I hope you’ve all resolved to watch a little more “Twilight” this year (“Eclipse” was only number four at the 2010 Box Office, we can do better than that!).
Wondering what’s in store for “The Twilight Saga” cast this year? Thankfully, we know they’re all currently shooting “Breaking Dawn” and “Part 1″ will be released on November 18. But since that’s like – I don’t know – 5,000 days away (not exact math), I’m sure I’m not the only one curious to know what other projects our favorite young actors have hitting our local cineplexes this year.
I’ve taken the liberty of calling them each up individually, or spending an excessive amount of time on IMDB (one or the other), to bring you the scoop on what these ”Twilight” stars have in store.
Kristen Stewart

While a popular blockbuster made her career, all of Stewart’s other role choices since becoming Bella Swan are in the sexually devious, art-house wheelhouse. She plays a cheating carny in “Adventureland,” young Joan Jett in “The Runaways” and a teenage stripper/prostitute in “Welcome to the Rileys.” Interesting, right?
In 2011, Stewart will continue to grace low-budget features with her million-dollar pout.
Francis Ford Coppola, after owning the movie rights to Jack Kerouac’s “On The Road” for 31 years, is finally producing an adaptation with Sam Riley as the main character Sal Paradise and Garrett Hedlund (“TRON: Legacy”) as his party-crazed cohort Dean Moriarty. Stewart is playing Moriarty’s first wife Mary Lou, who is a partier, openly flirtatious and sexually devious (natch). When her husband abandons her, she sleeps with one or two or nine sailors to get even. (This one doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’re hoping it makes its way to theaters as planned in ’11.)
In addition, Stewart and her mother are still trying to get funding for “K-11.” Called one of the strangest projects in Hollywood, KStew would play a male-to-female transsexual prisoner with autism and Mama KStew would make her directing debut. All I’m saying is, if playing a male-to-female transsexual prisoner with autism doesn’t win Stewart an Oscar, I don’t know what would.
Robert Pattinson
You can tell from Pattinson’s movie choices that he wants fans to love his brain, not just his looks. Watch out Rob, it took Brad Pitt years to be taken seriously. Pattinson has played a seriously gay Salvador Dali in “Little Ashes” and the seriously dramatic Tyler Hawkins in “Remember Me.” Now he’s slated for two period dramas in 2011. “Water for Elephants” will open on April 22, and casts Pattinson alongside Academy Award winners Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz. Hopefully his acting chops are strong enough to stack up against them, and also the elephant.
The other film is called “Bel Ami,” and no it’s not affiliated with the gay porno company of the same name (in case you were wondering). It’s based on French author Guy de Maupassant’s second novel, published in 1885, and stars Pattinson as a young Parisian climbing to power by manipulating the city’s wealthiest women. “Bel Ami” doesn’t yet have a release date, but you can be sure they’ll be some intensely dramatic love scenes with he and co-stars Christina Ricci and Uma Thurman. Or so a guy can dream.

Translation:
Eszes Szabolcs really looks like the worlds most beautiful man Robert Pattinson, who is famous for his role of Edward from The Twilight Saga.
The actor recently filmed here his upcoming movie, in which Szabolcs was his stunt double.
– I read the books and watched all the movies, but that's all. I went to the casting not because of Robert Pattinson. I thought it will be an exciting experience for me as an actor to play in a film like this (He is an actor is Hungary, mainly plays in theatres ~ Veronika), even if only an extra. Finally that turned out a completely different thing.
– Lots of people came to the auditions. One of my friend was wondering how we could be ahead of the long line. We walked in the hallway when a man coming from the opposite direction just took a look at me and he was suprised how much similarity is between me and Robert. As later we found out he was the casting manager. We went in and they asked if I have any experiences as an actor, and they gave me a smaller role in the movie. I became Robert's dream. This may sound a bit weird, but in the story there is one part when I meet Robert (George), I'm a rich guy, while he's poor. He sees himself in me, and decides he'll become like me. I also got this role because we are the same in size with Robert, so it will look good in the movie he really can see himself in me. Our head was the one thing we had not the same, because his hat was big for me. But the size of our clothes completely matched.
– In the film are many famous actors and actresses. Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Kristin Scott Thomas also plays in it. They are big names in the film industry. The shooting wasn't that easy the first few days. It was very cold outside to shoot. There were a lot of fans waiting to catch a glimpse of Robert, they were able to stand whole day on Andrássy street freezing. At first I couldn't even speak with Rob, 'cause he was stressed because of the crowd. An actor is a human as well. During filming actors make a lot of mistakes in the text or they get the whole scene bad. When we were filming the indoor scenes he was much more relaxed. He came up to me and we talked. He asked me who I was and how long was I acting.
Uma Thurman completely enchanted me. We had a scene we filmed in Tihany (it's a beautiful countryside with a lake and some hills and fields around ~ Veronika). After the shooting we prepeared to go back to the capital, but she [Uma] asked for a little time before leaving. I was curious what she wanted, so I watched her. She went back to the Balaton lake-side, because she wanted to take some flowers as souvenirs. Since this is a costume drama, Uma is wearing a big black dress. Adorable. She is very down-to-earth and funny. She did not act like a superstar. She had only one problem. She didn't like the cottage-cheese dumpling she ate one day. In the very last shooting day she invited me to the crew-party where also attended Robert's girlfriend, Kristen Stewart. When I met her, she just pointed to me, and said, "OMG, you really look like Robert!" Of course in english. That was all about meeting her.
Uma Thurman has mentioned Robert Pattinson from her recent interview article where she discussed about age differences.
Have you ever felt any difficulty to find interesting roles because of age?
In the last movies, I only have romantic relationships with younger guys. Even my 12 years-old daughter noticed that. Of course I’m very disturbed by the fact that Robert Pattinson played my husband.. But my current mate is seven years older than me.
Opens: 2011
Cast: Uma Thurman, Robert Pattinson, Christina Ricci, Kristin Scott Thomas
Director: Declan Donnellan, Nick Ormerod
Summary: In Belle Epoque-era Paris, a former French soldier from the lower class returns from Algeria and becomes a journalist. Through a series of affairs with well-connected women, he uses his looks and smarts to make his way up the social ladder.
Analysis: Though sharing the same name as Europe’s most prestigious hardcore gay porn studio, a fact that made many a headline writer’s day when “Twilight” hunk Robert Pattinson was cast, the film is actually an adaptation of acclaimed French author Guy de Maupassant’s second novel in 1885. The story is familiar, a young man basically screws over and just plain screws his way into high society, yet it’s also considered one of the great books of its time and remains a perennial favourite in certain countries.A lot of the novel’s appeal however is de Maupassant’s legendarily efficient and involving prose, a writing style that inspired countless others from W. Somerset Maugham to Friedrich Nietzsche, and one that will be very difficult to translate to the screen. It’s also very much a classic French tale, so an English adaptation will likely get a hostile reception in western Europe even if it’s good – if it’s sub-par then god help anyone trying to do promotion for it over there.
Adapted by newbie scribe Rachel Bennette and directed by a pair of stage production veterans making their feature debut, the London and Budapest-shot period piece will have lots of raunchy appeal that “Twilight” moms might be nervous about their daughters seeing. One major scene is an orgy sequence with Pattinson’s character which one source tells the press will be “tastefully done”. That scene, shot at Kent’s Crossness Pumping Station, will be drenched in candlelight and lace to disguise the fact the station is living up to its name in a different way than it was designed for.
More exciting is the cast with the brilliant Thomas, Thurman and Ricci ably supporting Pattinson who seems a better fit for this kind of material than some of his other projects. He’s also joined by some under appreciated great British male talent like Philip Glenister (“Life on Mars,” “Ashes to Ashes”), James Lance (“Absolute Power,” “No Heroics”) and Colm Meaney (“Star Trek: DS9,” “The Commitments”). Set photos show off some exquisite looking costume design, but no footage is yet out and a release date isn’t locked. At last report it’ll be hitting the UK in August which means a likely late Summer/early Fall release in the States.
Protagonist Pictures, the Sales and Marketing Company for Bel Ami, has just released their Sundance 2011 festival line-up and unfortunately absent is Bel Ami starring Robert Pattinson and Uma Thurman.
The UK release date for Robert Pattinson's new movie, Bel Ami has been announced and we don't have that long to wait!
Optimum Releasing, have just revealed that the UK theatrical release date for the movie will be August 2011.
It is thought that this is a tentative release date as it still has TBC next to it but hopefully it won't be too far off.
The film is as yet unrated, but from the saucy tit bits we've been hearing of, it probably won't be a 12A!
