Kristen Stewart Should Be Given Recognition for 'The Runaways'

Kristen Stewart is best known for her role as Bella Swan in the "Twilight" series, but she has played other roles. In fact, she has played other roles extremely well and deserves recognition. Most notably, her role as Joan Jett in "The Runaways." As Joan Jett, Kristen Stewart gives an amazing performance.


The movie and Kristen Stewart's portrayal of Jett, however, were overlooked and almost completely forgotten this awards season. Other than at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, her name and role were never even mentioned in consideration.


Stewart received positive critical reviews of her work in "The Runaways." Kirk Honeycut in the Film Journal International called Kristen's performance "the driving force." Roger Ebert said of Stewart (and co-star Dakota Fanning,) that the pair "bring more to their characters than the script provides." A.O. Scott of the New York Times said of Kristen's role, "Ms. Stewart, watchful and unassuming, gives the movie its spine and soul."


Kristen Stewart's commitment to Joan Jett is evident throughout the movie. Her walk, attitude, and voice all perfectly match the famous rock star. Stewart sings during the movie, and her voice blends seamlessly with The Runaways' real music.


Often given negative feedback for her role and acting ability as Bella Swan in the Twilight series, Stewart demonstrates her talent in "The Runaways." Before "The Runaways" premiered, many doubted Kristen's ability to handle the tough role of Joan Jett. Not only did Kristen Stewart prove she could handle the difficult role of playing a real person, she nailed it.


"The Runaways" failed to make a strong showing at the box office, which may have contributed to its lack of recognition. The R rating could have kept Stewart's younger fans away, and others may not have been able to see her as anyone other than Bella Swan. Whatever the reason, a lot of people missed out on a great film and an award-quality performance by Kristen Stewart.


Hopefully, Kristen Stewart will provide many more award-quality performances in her career. She is an extremely talented actress. Her strong role as Joan Jett should have received more recognition and landed Stewart many award nominations.


Thankfully MTV did step up and at least acknowledge "The Runaways," even if the nomination was for an insignificant part of the movie. Kristen Stewart and co-star Dakota Fanning received a "Best Kiss" nomination, but unfortunately Kristen Stewart lost to herself and her Twilight saga co-star, Robert Pattinson. At least she still won!

It was a good year to be bored in LA. I loved the slow-burn narcissism of Noah Baumbach's Greenberg and Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, but nothing beat West Coast ennui better than a gang of pre-punk teenage girls with guitars in this hazy, Quaalude-stoned reverie for the city's hedonistic heyday. Beautifully filmed by debut director Floria Sigismondi, who paints a kind of lovesick valentine to The Virgin Suicides via Christiane F., The Runaways captures what most join-the-dots music biopics don't: the vitality of its subject. It's as though the film had been shot through a smear of glam rock facepaint by a camera mounted on platform boots -- catching that fleeting thrill of being 16 and defiant, before the world comes crashing back down. And Dakota Fanning's eerie-eyed, silent film miming to "Lady Grinning Soul" -- before flipping off the school assembly -- goes way deeper than any over-the-top, earnest Oscar acting.

It's really surreal. It wasn't bad; it was a good experience, but it was really weird to look up on the screen and do a double take at Kristen (Stewart) as me. I think all the actresses did amazing jobs at presenting us. I can't say enough about that.


WHAT DID YOU AND STEWART TALK ABOUT?
I did tell Kristen things that I wouldn't tell anybody else. That was just back story, Runaways stuff, or my feelings about something just to give her a sense of who I was beyond this Joan Jett person. Who was Joan? To try to give her a sense of where I was coming from. Why I was so strident. Why it was so important tome.

Twi-hards continued to line up in droves, beginning with midnight screenings, to drink in the third chapter of the Stephenie Meyer vamps vs. werewolves saga this summer. The world got plenty of shirtless shots of Taylor Lautner, not to mention the big-screen 'Twilight' parody 'Vampires Suck.'

'The Runaways' One Of The Most Unfairly Overlooked Movies Of 2010

When I reviewed the movie back in March I called Kristen Stewart a modern James Dean. I’m standing by that. If you’ve only seen her in Twilight, you’ve probably assumed the worst about the future vampire bride, but in The Runaways Stewart is stupendous as real life, fem rocker Joan Jett. The rest of the movie around her, isn’t bad either. It’s a real, seedy, drug-infested, sex-soaked rise to rock and roll fame tale, except all the rockers just happen to be girls. The film focuses primarily on the story of Runaways front girl Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) as she’s indoctrinated into the rock and roll lifestyle, then sexed up to sell records by the zany, scene-stealing Michael Shannon as manager Ken Fowler. But it’s Stewart Joan Jett who will really capture your attention, and she ends up carrying the movie. Stewart’s Joan lives and breathes guitar licks, as the true talent behind the music. The rock and roll scenes are toe-tapping fun and the tale of an all girl band manufactured, unleashed, and then run aground is as interesting and fucked up as it ought to be. You’d think any movie starring Kristen Stewart would be an instant sensation, yet somehow her Twilight fandom never really seemed to notice she was in it. Maybe it was the film’s hard R-rating which scared the overly chase Twilight crowd away. Whatever the reason, while the movie earned positive reviews, once it was released no one seemed to notice.

Films Eligible For 2011 Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have announced that 248 feature films are eligible for best picture at the 2010 Academy Awards. The number is down from previous years — According to THR, 274 films were eligible in 2009, and 281 in 2008.


The list of 248 eligible films have been sent with a nominations ballot to all active and life members of the Academy “who shall vote in the order of their preference for not more than ten pictures.” The ten films receiving the highest number of votes shall become the nominations for final voting for the Best Picture award. The nominations will be announced live on January 25th 2011 at 5:30am psd.


The rules for eligibility is as follows:


Films must be feature length (defined as over 40 minutes)
Publicly exhibited by means of 35mm or 70mm film, or in a 24- or 48-frame progressive scan Digital Cinema format with a minimum projector resolution of 2048 by 1080 pixels
For paid admission in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County for a qualifying run of at least seven consecutive days, advertised and exploited during their Los Angeles County qualifying run in a manner considered normal and customary to the industry.
Films that, in any version, receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release will not be eligible for Academy Awards in any category. (This includes broadcast and cable television as well as home video marketing and Internet transmission.) However, ten minutes or ten percent of the running time of a film, whichever is shorter, is allowed to be shown in a nontheatrical medium prior to the film’s theatrical release.
