'Breaking Dawn' Production Delayed

Photobucket

PeopleMag With Hawaii and the North American West Coast placed on tsunami advisories early Friday after an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck in Japan, the Vancouver Island beach area in British Columbia where Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart and the rest of the Wolf Pack are filming the Twilight series' Breaking Dawn has been evacuated.

The actors are not believed to be in any danger, but for safety measures they apparently have been moved out of the region. The town where production is taking place, Tofino, contains a long stretch of open coast on the furthest westerly point of the island and was seen in the earlier The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Tinsel Korey, 30, who plays Makah Emily Young in the movies, rather dramatically Tweeted Friday: "They're evacuating us 4 a tsumnani [sic] warning. If this … is my last my tweet. I love you. The end. Hugz."She later added, "If this is the moment. Then I've lived a good life. And I'm thankful 4 everything I've been given."

Updated! According to LaineyGossip Kristen is not on the Tofino set.
Vancouver Island has been put on tsunami warning. Twilight production was in Tofino – cast and crew were reportedly moved. People.com mentioned that Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner were among them. Just some clarification on this since you Twi-Hards seem to be panicking about Juliet being without her Romeo Rob in this time of crisis.

The wolves were there, yes. But contrary to the story in People, I have heard from two locktight slamdunk infallible witnesses who SAW Kristen Stewart last night at the Sheraton Wall Centre. It was late. Well past the time that any travel to Vancouver Island would have been possible. She was with her bodyguard/manager/best friend/whatever John. John stepped out of the hotel shortly after to run some errands.

Why Nothing Is The Next 'Twilight'

Hollywood is all about finding the next hot thing, whether that's a script, an actor, a director, a genre (vampires anyone?) or the ultimate discovery, a lucrative film series.

The seven "Harry Potter" movies have so far netted over $6 billion, while the first three installments of "The Twilight Saga" have earned just under $1.8 billion. That's nearing "Oprah" money, people! (As opposed to "Potter," which is nearing "Zuckerberg" money... but we'd rather be Oprah.)

And that's not even counting all the licensing and swag sales... you gotta figure another few hundred thousand in Edward Cullen lunchboxes alone.

Studio executives would happily hand over their firstborns to the Volturi for a lead on "the next 'Twilight' franchise" (trust me, I've prank-called). That's because finding such a rarity is about as easy as winning the lottery.

Paramount developed "Twilight" for three years before getting letting the rights slip to a then-little-known production company Summit Entertainment. Universal and United Artists passed on their options for "Star Wars," and 20th Century Fox gave Lucas hell through production, worried the over-budget film wouldn't amount to much.

The problem movie studios run into is trying too hard to find "the next _______." "The Twilight Saga" is as much the next "Harry Potter" as "Pirates of the Caribbean" is the next "The Lord of the Rings" or "Ice Age" is the next "Toy Story." Fanatics of one series aren't necessarily looking to glom onto a new similar thing.

It seems like every other week we're hearing buzz about some book being adapted for the big screen that its producers hope can be "The next 'Twilight.'" News flash, producers: There's only, and will only ever be, one "Twilight."

Before breaking down these wannabes, let's first explore what makes "Twilight," "Twilight."

Addictive Book Series: If a reader spends time with the books, they're definitely hooked for the films.
Odd Names: The Twi-Hard base are teen girls. They're tired of being an "Ann" or "Sarah" and enjoy fantasizing about being a "Bella," "Esme" or "Renesmee."
Moping Female Lead: Not to sound derogatory, but teenagers mope. High school sucks, dude. We identify with Bella because we're going through puberty, or have.
Heart-of-Gold Bad Boy: Vampires are heartless killers, but not Edward, who walks a thin line in between.
Supernatural Love Triangle: Who doesn't want to be desired by both a debonair vampire and beefy werewolf?

The following titles have all been called "the next "Twilight." While they all contain traits similar to Stephenie Meyer's series, here's why none of them are...

'Breaking Cast' Evacuated From Vancouver: "Everyones Safe"

Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner evacuated in tsunami warning

Taking proper precautions in lieu of the tragic tsunami in Japan, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner were evacuated from Vancouver, Canada yesterday (March 10).

The “Twilight” co-stars along with the rest of the Wolf Pack were filming for “Breaking Dawn” in Vancouver’s Island beach area when they were told to leave the region.

Reports say the cast was not in any danger, but for safety measures left the coastal location.

Tinsley Korey, who plays Makah Emily Young in the series, tweeted, ‘They’re evacuating us 4 a tsunami warning. If this…is my last tweet. I love you. The end. Hugz.”
source

Twilightlexicon: Summit Entertainment addressed some confusion on how the Tsunami was affecting the Breaking Dawn cast. Various versions of what was happening with the cast started to emerge on Twitter and elsewhere. They released this brief statement on their official Facebook page in order to quell rumor and desensationalize the story as it related to their cast and crew:

“Due to the tsunami advisory, filming of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn has been delayed. All cast and crew were evacuated to the movie production’s base camp. Everyone is safe and sound.”

The cast and crew were filming in the Tofino area which is on the coast. It’s the same area where some of the cliff diving sequences were shot for New Moon. The cast was onsite when moved very early this morning local Pacific Time as a precaution.
Much of the West Coast of North and South America is/was under Tsunami advisory/warning. Additionally, it should be noted that LaPush is also under the same warning. Current thought (as we post this at 1:30 East Coast Time) is that they are not anticipating major damage in the area, but people along the coast should listen to local authorizes and abide by their directives as to what is considered “safe ground”.

Several cast members such as Peter Facinelli and Gil Birmingham took to their Twitters with prayers for the victims. Several organizations such as the Red Cross, Shelter Box, and others are reaching out.

Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart in Twilight: Eclipse.

Montrealgazette: Among those taking precautions in the wake of the Japan earthquake and tsunami alert is the company fiilming the latest Twilight installment Breaking Dawn.

People magazine is reporting stars Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart were warned to stay away from the beach area.

A tsunami warning was issued to B.C. authorities among other agencies at midnight. An update at 1:50 a.m. that upgraded the risk.

Tofino Mayor John Fraser said this morning he had been awake since midnight when the local emergency operating committee was convened.

"It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone here," said Fraser. "But this one won't affect us, it's so far away."

There was a minimal rise in the water along the B.C. coast.

Parks Canada closed select access points to Pacific Rim National Park P are ensuring public beaches are evacuated.

"Major damage to park infrastructure is not expected at this point," said Laura Judson of Parks Canada.

As a precautionary measure, School District 70 has closed all of its schools in the Tofino-Ucluelet area.

"School District needed to make a timely decision based on information known at the time. In consultation with Emergency Preparedness officials, it was decided to err on the side of caution and close schools to students and staff. Not every school in the district lies within the tsunami inundation zone but many routes to and from schools would take school buses through these zones," said a media release by the district

Vampire Facelifts: The Next Cosmetic Craze?

Move over Botox. The latest youth-defying cosmetic procedure involves injecting your own blood into wrinkles

theweek.com: Legend has it that vampires stay young-looking by feasting on the blood of others, but a new, real-life cosmetic procedure turns the tables. The so-called "vampire facelift" involves injecting a patient's own blood into her wrinkles and hollow cheeks to turn back the clock. Here's a brief guide:

What exactly is a "vampire facelift"?
It's not a facelift really, but rather an in-office cosmetic procedure in which an injectable substance known as Sephyl is used to fill in wrinkles and furrows, to give the appearance of youth. But, unlike common fillers like Juvederm and Restylane, the substance in question is based on a patient's own blood. Blood is drawn from a patient's arm, and the platelets are spun out using a Selphyl-brand centrifuge. It's this "platelet-rich fibrin matrix" that is then injected.

Does it really work?
Some say so. The procedure has been touted on television shows like "The Doctors" and "The Rachael Ray Show," and it has proponents in the medical community. Dr. Joseph M. Gryskiewicz, the chair of the emerging trends committee of the American Society of Plastic Surgeon, says he's been impressed with the results, calling the product "as good as any filler out there." But, Dr. Phil Haeck, the organization's president, isn't so sure. "There are no scientific studies, only personal attestations," he says. "This is another gimmick that people are using to make themselves stand out on the internet" in a "dog-eat-dog" competition for patients.

What is its supposed advantage?
Proponents say that because Selphyl involves injecting something from a patient's own body, rather than a foreign substance, it has a natural advantage over the competition. Some doctors argue that it's less likely to create bumps and irregularities than synthetic fillers.

Is it better than Botox?
It's a different beast, and the two can't really be compared. Selphyl fills in a space, while Botox works by inhibiting muscles.

Is it safe?
Good question. The F.D.A. hasn't approved or cleared the use of platelet-rich fibrin matrix in this way, though it did clear a similar procedure for use by orthopedic doctors for tissue repair in 2002. At least one doctor's study suggests the vampire facelifts are safe, but there hasn't been a formal evaluation.

Shawarma (Arabic: شاورما‎), is a sandwich-like wrap of shaved lamb, goat, chicken, turkey, beef, or a mixture thereof. The meat is placed on a spit, and may be grilled for as long as a day. Shawarma is a fast-food staple across the Arab world, Europe and the Caucasus.

Rob & Kristen Caught Kissing

Kristen Stewart And Robert Pattinson Seen 'Kissing Passionately'

Examiner: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were caught "kissing passionately" in a private room at an Italian restaurant in Vancouver. There is nothing surprising about this since the two are a real life couple. They met while being tested for parts for the popular film Twilight and their instant connection led them to have wild success both on and off the screen.

The pair have been going on dates in the Vancouver area while filming The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Sometimes they go by themselves and other times they are accompanied by their cast mates and body guards. The two have yet to be photographed snogging and are very careful about where they go and who they are with. They are the best celebrity couple when it comes to being discreet and so far it has worked out for them.

"The private dining rooms are private but not private enough. Just last week someone went by to see if they needed their plates cleared and they had their lips locked. They were kissing passionately," a source revealed.

The pair noshed at Cicioppino Restaurant after 8:30PM one night and from the sounds of things, they were alone. Maybe they were just rehearsing one of their scenes...

Catherine Hardwicke Says 'Twilight' Fans Wouldn't Be Able To Handle Audition Footage

The Examiner: There are probably any number of Twilight fans who wish they could've been a fly on the wall during Robert Pattinson's infamous audition for the role of "Edward Cullen" in Twilight.

As the story goes - most often revisited by director Catherine Hardwicke herself in one interview or another - Pattinson, who was a struggling actor near the brink of giving up on that pursuit, flew himself to the United States to audition for the part knowing Kristen Stewart was helming the lead, and things went very well between the two. Per any number of Hardwicke's recounts, the scenes involved in said audition were romantic and the try-out was done in Hardwicke's own home.

Since then, and especially since the first film's release, it's become something of a running joke among Twilight fans that if the audition tape were to ever surface, it'd break the internet with its uber-viral-ness.

That said, MTV decided to bring up the issue with Hardwicke during her press time for Red Riding Hood (video interview attached), and Hardwicke coyly responded to state that she doesn't believe Twilight fans could handle it if that footage were released.

So . . . Think you could you handle it? Or is Hardwicke right here?

Also attached is another segment from MTV's interview in which Catherine Hardwicke issues updates about her other forthcoming work, including Hamlet, Max Ride, and Mazerunner.

She's a busy gal! Hey, they don't give Guiness Book of World Records placement and Women in Film Director's Awards to just anyone!

On a related note, when speaking of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart to E! Online, Hardwicke also expressed her desire to work with the two again some day. Also, she definitely showed her support for one of Kristen Stewart's newer-announced projects, Snow White And The Huntsman, saying "She's perfect" (video attached).

Lastly, she spoke with Access Hollywood a bit about how the ultimate decision was made between Robert Pattinson and Shiloh Fernandez, et al for the part of "Edward," and Shiloh Fernandez himself talked about the Twilight connection - for better and for worse (both attached as well).

As a reminder, Red Riding Hood hits theaters this Friday. It's Catherine Hardwicke's first finished film since directing 2008's Twilight.

'Breaking Dawn' 'Isle Esme' Location In Line For Demolition

Examiner: By now, no doubt, you've seen the photos of Casa Em Paraty, the location chosen and used this winter for the "Isle Esme" set of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1.

Most feedback on the selection has been incredibly positive, and, despite the very pricey rates of stay for the resort, many fans have expressed a desire to add the location to their future Twilight touring roster. Well, that is a dwindling possibility because due to environmental ramifications of the mansion's situation in Paraty, Brazil, Casa Em Paraty is on its way to being destroyed.

According to the helpful translation of one of the same Brazilian fansites (via) which kept us all abreast of goings-on in the region while filming took place there, "According to information from INEA (State Institute of Environment), the owner of the mansion has been notified and is aware of the illegal construction done in an environmentally protected area in the Ecological Reserve of Guatinga (REG) [and] The demolition process has already been suggested by INEA and awaits court decision."

While the agency allowed filming for Breaking Dawn on the premises, the report states, that does in no way nullify their plans. As bluntly as it could be said, it was, by an agency representative: "This house is next in our queue."

Environmental issues in Brazil are more pressing than many other places in the world, particularly when it comes to ecologically protected areas and reserves. A majority of the Amazon Rainforest is located in Brazil, and the flora, fauna, and animalia are particularly sensitive to structures like this. The Rainforest is critical to this planet in many ways - too many for this discussion, at least.

So, as a Twilight fan, this may be appalling to your sensitivities. However, if you're an environmentalist, you might applaud the agency's efforts to protect these reserve areas from the degradation tourism inevitably causes an area. In either case, "Isle Esme" may wind up being scratched off the Twilight tour plans by default . . . that is, demolition.

Amanda Seyfried Says She Was Jokingly Called Kristen Stewart On Set Of 'Red Riding Hood'

Okmagazine: It’s hard to deny the similarities between Twilight and the new film Red Riding Hood. But Amanda Seyfried insists they are quite different — even though Twilight/Red Riding Hood director Catherine Hardwicke may have called her Kristen Stewart on set!

“It’s a bummer that that’s what’s happening,” she said of the comparison, adding that she doesn’t like it when “an audience has [certain] expectations.”

But she can understand the comparisons since Catherine directed both films, and Twilight dad, Billy Burke, plays a father in Red Riding Hood, too!

But Amanda and her co-stars Max Irons and Shiloh Fernandez (compared to Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner) had fun with the comparisons on set.

“We’d make jokes about [Hardwicke] calling us Kristen and Rob and Taylor,” Amanda said.

And Shiloh was actually considered for Rob’s Twilight role as Edward Cullen!

“Yeah, I mean it does surround a girl coming of age in a love triangle, but that’s a lot of movies,” Amanda admitted. “The truth is, it’s an entirely different story.

“I think audiences are going to be really surprised when they end up seeing this movie because … there’s so many elements and there’s so much going on,” she added. “It’s a murder mystery as well as a coming-of-age movie, and there’s a lot of tension and it’s scary. All those elements combine to be thrilling, I think.”

Bath & Body Works Sues Summit Over 'Twilight' Toiletries

hollywoodreporter: Bath & Body Works is suing Twilight distributor Summit Entertainment, hoping to get a declaratory judgment that its “Twilight Woods” line of lotions, shower gels and other products doesn’t infringe the trademark on the hit vampire film franchise.

This might be the best toiletry-related lawsuit since Johnny Carson’s estate sued to stop “Here’s Johnny Portable Toilets.” Bath & Body Works says it’s under threat from Summit because its lotions and other bathroom products allegedly rip off the design and color palate of Twilight promo materials.
Confusion in the marketplace?

Summit allegedly thinks so. Now Bath &Body Works has beat Summit to the courthouse to stake its claim.

“The term ‘Twilight’ is used so as to evoke the idea of a particular time of day when the sun is just below the horizon, illuminating the landscape,” the lawsuit says. “Whereas defendant uses the term ‘Twilight’ to refer to Defendant’s teen vampire saga.”

Sounds downright relaxing, unlike the other big trademark case in the news — the one where Lady Gaga is threatening to sue a British vendor of breast milk ice cream named “Baby Gaga.” We assume that Bath & Body Works execs never told anyone they had the potential to smell like Rob Pattinson. Obviously, that would reek of trouble.

Summit Projects $1.2 Billion For 'Breaking Dawn'

Thewrap: Summit’s two coming blockbusters, “Breaking Dawn 1 and 2” will cost $263 million — not the $200 million previously reported — and are projected to bring in a staggering $1.2 billion for the studio, according to confidential documents obtained by TheWrap.

The documents were part of the prospectus used to borrow $750 million in capital this week for Summit Entertainment. Most of the document can be read here.

The prospectus contains a wealth of data and insight into one of the few privately-held movie studios, and reveals how Summit has successfully leveraged the “Twilight” franchise and mitigated its risk through foreign pre-sales.

Summit declined to comment about the document.

The papers also detail the reasons behind the refinancing. Summit Entertainment, now four years old into its current incarnation, will repay its original investors a $200 million dividend with the massive loan.

The largest investor, Peak Capital Investment, a consortium that includes Rizvi Traverse and Participant, stands to recoup nearly $100 million from its 48 percent stake.

But the biggest news may be the cost structure behind the fourth and fifth installments of Summit’s blockbuster Twilight franchise. “Breaking Dawn 1” will cost $127.5 million, but according to the documents Summit only has $38.4 million at risk. The film will be released in November 2011.

The second film, “Breaking Dawn 2,” cost $136.2 million, with Summit’s exposure limited to $51.2 million, according to the documents.

The studio anticipates revenues of $1.2 billion related to just those two pictures, the documents say. They are projecting a profit of $228 million for the first film and $219 million for the second for a total of nearly $450 million.

The budgets of “Breaking Dawn” may be higher than expected, but they are relatively modest when compared to other Hollywood blockbusters.

Nonetheless, the costs have skyrocketed from the first film, when the studio put up a mere $37 million for “Twilight” and reaped $231 million in profits.

Clearly, it was a good time to cash in some chips.

“This enables long term investors to cash out some return from the great success of the ‘Twilight’ franchise,” Harold Vogel, head of Vogel Capital Management, told TheWrap.

The company will pay 7.5 percent interest on the loan over five and a half years, according to Wall Street reports after the deal closed on Tuesday.

The timing makes sense for Summit’s investors, if only because the studio has little in the pipeline that seems destined to replicate the phenomenal success of “Twilight.”

After all, “Twilight” has a natural expiration date, with the final two parts in the franchise due for release over the next two years.

Indeed, the prospectus to investors from UBS and J.P.

Morgan paints a picture of a company that generated hundreds of millions of dollars in profits almost exclusively on the back of its hit vampire franchise.

On the strength of “Twilight” and its two sequels, Summit went from a start-up studio that lost $76.5 million in 2008 to a Cinderella story with $340.9 million in profits last year alone.

Though Summit originally was seeking to borrow $800 million, the company did not reduce the size of the dividend to its shareholders even when the amount raised was reduced.

Further demonstrating that the dividend was the main impetus for the refinancing drive, Summit in essence decided to reward its stakeholders at the expense of having an extra $50 million of cash on the balance sheet to fund production and distribution.

Analysts contacted by TheWrap maintain that it will leave Summit on firmer financial footing.

It may also better position the studio to be sold, because it reduces debt and improves the company’s operating expenses.

“The cost of capital has likely been reduced, while long-run availability of capital to weather any box office downturn or misfires will be more assured,” Vogel told TheWrap. “As such, it also puts the company in a better balance sheet position to eventually be acquired, if the major investors ultimately decide to go that route.”

The company plans to use roughly $410 million of cash on its balance sheet to help complete production of the “Breaking Dawn” films, market them, and fund its future films.

Over the next two years, the company told potential investors that it will also make $499 million from other movies and from previously released “Twilight” films.

Not that any of those non-vampire projects are likely to reap substantial dividends by themselves.

Tellingly, in its bid to drum up new funding, Summit focused almost solely on the new “Twilight” films, giving only a passing nod to other studio titles, such as the Bruce Willis thriller “The Cold Light of Day” or the Mel Gibson dramedy “The Beaver.”

Summit has been remarkably conservative in managing its film slate, going heavy on acquisitions, but limiting exposure on the films it produces in-house.

Foreign pre-sales pay for the bulk of the studio’s films. For instance, Summit is putting up only $2 million of the $10 million budget for the immigrantion drama “A Better Life” and $17.5 million of the $34.8 million budget for the thriller “The Darkest Hour.”
